I get asked all the time when should I book my senior photo session? What is the best time of year for senior portraits? The answer depends on some things. Are you planning on using an image from your senior session for your schools yearbook?
If the answer is yes, then you need to find out what your school deadline is to submit your image. Often times the deadline will be in the Fall, usually between October – November. Definitely check with your school because some schools will have it earlier in the school year!
I often know the deadlines for the local schools because of working with them. If you are planning on using one of the images from your senior photos with me, I will prep your yearbook photo and send it over to your high school. This way they can reach out directly to me if they need the image to be a smaller file size or if the crop needs to be different. If your school wants you to send it over, that’s no problem too.
So you know you want to use an image from your senior portraits in the yearbook. Perfect, you should be booking your session during the Summer or Fall going into your senior year. Fall definitely gets busy, so book your session as soon as Fall dates are opened up. Right now (in mid July) I am booking through the end of August. I’ll be opening up my calendar for September and October sessions mid August. If you want your senior portraits at the beach then July and August is a perfect time to book your senior photos during. The summer is also a perfect time to capture your senior portraits because of how green and lush everything is. I schedule my sessions close to sunset so we won’t be out in mid day sun when the temperature is at it peak.
If your answer is no to using an image in the yearbook then you don’t have to plan your session around the yearbook. You have so many more options and can pick your favorite season for your senior photos. Love the winter?! We can plan a fun outdoors session when it snows! You could also opt instead to do a senior portrait session in the Spring right before you graduate. You could even wait until the end of the school year when you have gotten your cap and gown and have some photos taken with them!
No matter when you decide to book your senior portraits, I can’t stress how nice it is to document this special life event with a portrait session. It’s a big moment in your life, graduating high school and moving onto “adulthood”. A professional portrait session that captures you now is something your parents will treasure as you get older. I love collaborating with my seniors to create a senior portrait experience that highlights what makes you, you!
